Third national oral health epidemiological survey of China's middle-aged and elderly dental caries prevalence rates were as high as 88.1 percent and 98.4 percent, the rate of periodontal health were 14.5% and 14.1%. Oral diseases of the elderly in many premature loss of chewing function, can also cause or aggravate heart disease, stomach trouble, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and joint disease and complications of serious physical harm.


Middle-aged and elderly oral health is a major problem: lack of knowledge of oral health; self-awareness of oral health is not strong; good oral hygiene habits enough; poor oral hygiene; dental caries in particular, root caries were not serious and most effective treatment; periodontal Diseases of the elderly in general is also the main reason for the loss of teeth; cervical wedge-shaped defects and the prevalence of oral cancer were also on the rise.


The Ministry of Health for Disease Control and Prevention Bureau Kong Lingzhi, deputy director at the ceremony in 2008 announced that the country "Love Teeth Day" campaign to promote health promotion activities launched. Activities include issuing oral health education, community education programs for the elderly in the free check-ups, and the mass media, popular with middle-aged and elderly oral health knowledge and treatment of disease.
